Gunmen kidnap Abia varsity deputy vice-chancellor





 The Abia State Police Command has officially confirmed the kidnapping of Prof. Godwin Emezue, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of Abia State University Uturu. The incident occurred while he was refueling at a filling station in Umuopara. 

The Command's Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, issued a statement on behalf of Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, revealing that the abduction took place at around 7 p.m. on January 26, 2024.


According to the statement, the hoodlums seized Prof. Emezue, along with his wife who was with him in their vehicle. The perpetrators confiscated his wife's ATM card, forcibly took the Deputy Vice-Chancellor into a Lexus SUV, and fled the scene. The police assured the public that they are mobilizing resources, including intelligence and technical support, to investigate the crime and ensure the safe release of the victim.


The police statement called for calm among the residents of Abia State, urging them to carry on with their daily activities while remaining vigilant and security-conscious. Additionally, the public was encouraged to provide any useful information that could aid in resolving the situation and enhancing overall security in the state.


As of the latest information, the abductors have not established contact regarding any ransom, according to a source from Abia State University. The situation remains under the scrutiny of law enforcement agencies as efforts are intensified to secure the release of Prof. Godwin Emezue.
