NIGERIAN GUILD OF EDITORS WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS AND INSTALLS FELLOWS IN UYO CONFERENCE

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) concluded its recent conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, by inducting 39 new members and installing 14 fellows. The induction ceremony took place on Friday, while the fellows were installed during a gala night organized by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, on Thursday.

Renowned journalist and publisher of Newswatch Magazine, Ray Ekpu, emphasized the pivotal role of editors in setting the agenda for the government through the stories they publish. He urged the new inductees to be responsible editors, stating, "The editor decides what people must read and what they consider important. They are the people who set the agenda for the government and the people of Nigeria by the choices of stories and the placement of those stories."

Ekpu highlighted the increased significance of the editor's role, particularly during this critical time in the nation's history. He emphasized that editors play a crucial role in the survival of the nation and urged them to approach their responsibilities seriously.

NGE President and Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr Eze Anaba, called on the new members to actively contribute to the growth of the guild. He stressed the delicate situation of the country and the profession, urging the new inductees to use their experience and knowledge to help chart the way forward.

Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the Secretary of the Guild, disclosed that over 90 applications were received, but only 39 applicants were recommended for induction by the Screening Committee. Former President of the Guild, Mr Gbenga Adefaye, administered the oath of office to the new members during the ceremony.
